I’m very thankful to have a lot of work!-this weekend was very busy with four shows in 24 hours-last night I felt kind of wrecked by sunday night after the park jam
-trying to find balance between working and learning to relax-I dont turn my nose up at the opportunity to work!-especially with music!-and also in a world where so many can’t find work at all! But also, one cant run oneself into the ground, because that isn’t efficient either!-the moving of Gear is the hard part ,but that is my job-I feel honored and lucky to have any ‘gear’ whatsever!
I look forward to the possibility that one day I may get to focus more on just working on mixes and putting together music than moving heavy boxes and creating events-fliers etc, but, that being said,Phoenix for me has always been a do it yourself situation to put it simply, and I don’t see anyone that could do this in the way I would like.today I will try and be calm-the second Palace party, went incredibly well-it was packed but with folks that brought a good atmosphere-I’m really thankful for it,and to everyone that has helped bring it together right from the start-to have all International Beat parties here in Phx is a longtime dream of mine in a way-It is a Current-to induct this current is my intentions and I will share it-like a crop-no one person can sow all the seeds and harvest it-or eat it-it is for the village-and the seeds will travel far-I honestly feel the connection between all the places and people in the world is strengthened through celebration of this sort-I always give myself the freedom to play just what I want to hear-from any country or any time period-this night ‘The Palace’ is exciting to me because it is just focused on World Music-which if you think about it,is kind of the most open box in the world-I’m pretty bored with the concept of “Genres’ in music-they exist I suppose, but all streams lead together-or end up in the ocean.or something! ahaha!
- to organize a crew of like minded individuals for parties-to work together-this is the case already-and although I work in the Downtown area where I have been since 91-many of the people putting in their energy, effort, creativity and talent come from all areas of the Valley-from Far and Near-I have wanted to make a name for this association of individuals-but the thing that always stops me is “Naming it’-I have a hard time with names and naming things! haha what to call a Party Crew pushing the other side of the coin-the unexplored and limitless ? Cosmonauts?-Phoeniquerros? I can never think of one that doesn’t sound kind of cheezy when I think about it twice..
this is weird to just write my thoughts on here-any random person can read it-it’s been a couple of years-but the internet is very strange to me still-My Aunt Cindy gave me this computer to use for music-she is in the other world now-I am thankful for all the gifts she gave me in life while she was here-She was amazing! she encouraged me as a kid with music most of all-she just loved me and was a great great Aunt to me-it’s interesting to be involved in the etheric electric world of the internet-to me -this world the internet is very close to the Astral or invisible realm in a way-also,like a bathroom wall where one writes-which I kind of like as well-
Once I was a dishwasher-a cleanup boy in a neglected dry cleaner they hadn’t cleaned for years-sandwich maker numerous times-Pizza maker-prep cook where the owner took delight in tormenting me to try and break me,he did and I ended up quitting and making a terrible spell on him with his hair from his comb in a drawer and a dead bird-I have been a maker of Pasta in an empty pasta factory-Pizza boy in 125 degree no air conditioning in a strange pizza place on central-I was an irrigator for homes where I showed up at three in the morning to let the water in the yard-pinche dobermans trying to get me with just my stick! but once, when doing this as the sun came up I heard all the birds get quiet..I looked and huge hawk was bathing in the water!
-my first job was when I was 14-being dropped in rich neighborhoods with tons of other kids loaded into the back of a truck like sardines-putting leaflets on doorhandles-I dont even know if we were really payed ,or if they just took us to Chucky Cheez..a Job I learned a lot at was as a sign installer-this meant mostly digging holes all across the valley and putting up 4x8 signs -also sandblasting stone address plaques-cutting wood and painting huge things-mostly digging-I learned the different sorts of earth-posthole diggers and pinch bars and how to work with them-once we dug a hole so deep,it was cool down there even though it was at least 110 out-I quit when I began to lose it.putting up signs for developments near Superstition mountains..seeing I was a harbinger of things I hated..tried my hand at serving at the “Spaghetto factory’ on central-that was my first time being in the front of the restaurant-didn’t do so well although it was ok-
I quit and had a ‘great idea’ I knew how to paint huge murals with spray paint..maybe a local theater wanted backdrops! with my bright new idea I hit the streets on my bike headed to every theater I could think of.Well,it seemed they already had someone that did that, but one place said ‘why don’t you check the Great Arizona Puppet theater they might be hiring “-so I rode my bike there,I walked in the huge back room of the old church being converted into a theater-it was very near my home and I had been by it forever-always wanting to sneak in and explore it in it’s abandoned state-well what met my eyes but a pleasant smiling woman painting backdrops far beyond anything I was then capable of-I told them why I had come-they said they had no work of that sort but to leave my name in case of extra work-when I told them my last name-the woman painting heard it,she knew my brother from High school theater production he had been involved with-so this I think helped.Later they needed someone to climb a scaffold to switch out lights way up high-they called and I came-I ended up working there for years-everything!-
I was was truly like the Phantom of the Puppet theater or Quasimodo, looking down on Puppet shows from the rafters as I fixed things in lost upper areas of the huge amazing church-the building is ancient with a good vibration-I repainted and patched a whole cathedral by myself!-it was very challenging but they payed me a fair wage and treated me like family!-I was the maintenance person and fixer and renovator-it was a job with honor-I was so so thankful! they are good folks those Great Arizona Puppet Theater People, amazing people-their whole goal is to bring Puppet shows to kids-they tried to get me to puppeteer but it was too much for me-I could do it yes,but it was too demanding physically to crouch and operate the puppets for me-pretending to be Oscar Otter was pretty cool though I must say..
The strange thing about dj’ing for me,is,I never set out to do this-it was never my goal to “Be a Dj” It really chose me.I grew up around it and never wanted to be that person-it was too…not sure of the word.. too much in the forefront-too public and figurehead-but I was trying to make a tape (I have worked with sounds since I was very young, with tapes radio etc)..I had helped my girlfriend at the time 1998? buy a turntable because she was going to Dj-she left but the turntable stayed (as it was not quite payed off) I was trying to make a tape of records I had-to listen to after going on certain late night-Phoenix excursions (the nature of which I shall remain quiet on..)..
I wanted to make this tape to relax to and unwind to after these aforementioned “walks’ where I would return at 4 or 5 in the morn-all I had to do was record the the songs I wanted into one another-but something was not working!-the music seemed to clash and it dawned on me that I hadn’t learned to ‘beatmatch; as my dj friends had so often talked about earlier in the nineties-so even though I was efficient at sound collage , Bourroughs style tape cut ups/hand cut tape loops etc..these things did not matter when I was trying to overlay beat oriented music-(The music was early Dj Krush and an album from Dj Hive called working with sound among other things)-
I realized that to make this tape for myself I had to basically learn basic dj’ing.well I had heard of counting the beats, but really, this repulsed me,I was not capable of it-my ear just didn’t work that way and I hated the idea! I kept at it though just for that tape-and somehow one day I heard in my head the one song, with the other song going together!-it was like something broke open in my head-all of a sudden I could hear how all these songs would go together! it was really strange!-then it dawned on me-how jungle (I just had one or two discs) or other sounds-really fast and really slow -they were all wanting to be friends really! it was just a matter of pitch and the songs feeling right together-I had a good number of discs from my childhood and the later nineties-the spoken word stuff-all of it,it kept telling me to combine them with other things-I was experimenting a lot with it-but no desire to go out and play or try to show it or share it-I just wanted to make that damn tape!-well that was the trickster, right hand man of the Great Goddess working in my life it might seem..A kid asked me (my house was like a Graffiti clubhouse at that point 1999) if I would play a party at his house on the Southside-I flatly said “no’ I was not into it-not trying to be a dj-he put me on the flier anyhow and somehow pressured me into it!
the Party was horrible in a way-knuckleheads messing with my records as I tried to get things together-“I like my hip hop slow dude” -anyhow-we began to have more neighborhood jams down here Downtown-Alley stuff-garage stuff-rent out a space and have a really crazy space where 25 five of us show up type things-first official party was called Days of Bees” -it was just before 2000-by the time we had a y2k party in the bottom hallway of the “laird’ apartments it was already kind of in me somehow-
first bar we did parties at was Emerald Lounge-my roommate started them with other friends 2000? 2001?-I was the odd cat out-wanting to play Bollywood with some other weird record-folks would clear the floor, they hated it -I kind of hated that we were invading a spot that was home to old trucker ladies and gangsters pimping-lots of them sucked but it was ‘their’ spot-but things were just beginning to “change’ down here-I learned it was called gentrification and I fucking hated it -new weird people were coming in to the area acting like they were “saving the neighborhood’ But really they were just out for money and only friendly to yuppy crowds-it was obvious! and also -it was mixing with the Art scene which was really odd to me!
-I was determined to fight their conquistador like tendencies!-haha-little did I know I was like a Don Quixote (is that his name?) and they were going to do what they liked because they could afford to buy out anyone that stood in their way-Nowadays I will try and focus more on stuff that is worth growing, pushing “for” than fighting against walls-if that makes sense-I called myself Degentrification-or Djentrification as a play on the word once I learned that thats what it was called-it was to make fun of it-to put the word out there hoping some kid would see a flier-wonder what the word was and learn of it-maybe study it and find a solution to it one day-to know something you must name it-also in a way-to tell you, I am of the opposite intention-I am for the affordable and community-I’m for people-for the neighborhood-I want it to be ‘good’
so I am thankful for work.
thanks for patience with spelling-didn’t mean to write so much.
“The Palace” Party went very well this last Sat-Lot of work but worth it-the intention is to have solid World music parties here in Phoenix-so much amazing music to dig into-from all directions in this world-the idea seemed right when presented with Saturday nights at our local new Movie house and bar-“Filmbar” it’s perfect-Persian Style Lounge and Affordable good drink selection-hidden right Downtown and they are on point with supporting the parties-just hit up a local record shop “Revolver” and they have agreed to come on board with giving us a good new world compilation for this Saturday-on wax-I went ahead and made a facebook page for the night itself and here it is: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Palace/220158421340179#!/pages/The-Palace/220158421340179
